Grapefruits are a hybrid between pomelo (C. maxima) and orange (C. × sinensis). This red-fleshy variety with the reddish peel is very delicious! Grapefruits are said to help with weight loss as they have a positive effect on sugar metabolism.
Like almost all citrus fruits the grapefruit can be processed to jam and juice or (possibly sweetened or cognac poured over) raw eaten. It’s not easy to peel this fruits, so the flesh is often spooned out after the fruit has been cut into half. There are special grapefruit cutlery, the grapefruit knife and the grapefruit spoon. With a zester, the outer peel can be peeled off and used for flavouring. The juice is a popular ingredient in some cocktails.
