As with blood oranges and the red lemon, there are also red pigmented variants of mandarins and clementines. Unfortunately, the type and variety of this fruit shown here is not documented. Possibly it is Citrus clementina ‘Red Rubin’.
Mandarins and their closer relatives, the clementines (C. × aurantium), tangerines (C. tangerina) and satsumas (C. × unshiu), are smaller, flattened, very sweet and slightly sour tasting citrus fruits, which are eaten especially in winter. The peel is usually easy to peel and the individual fruit segments are easily divided. Clementines and satsumas are (almost) seedless. Mostly these fruits are served as table fruit, but they are also processed into juices. Filleted and skinned, the fruit segments of these fruits are traded as canned goods.
