The ruby-red pomegranate has been cultivated for thousands of years in the Mediterranean area and the Middle East. It is mentioned in ancient, religious and mythical writings of different cultures and is immortalized in medieval paintings. The fruit symbolizes life, fertility, power, blood and death. Because of its numerous seeds (from Latin granum), the pomegranate was namepate for the military grenade, because of its colour for the gemstone garnet.
Edible are the juicy arils. They can be eaten raw with the seeds and are often served as decoration and refinement of spicy as sweet dishes and desserts. Pomegranate juice is obtained from these fruits, which is then processed into pomegranate wine and grenadine. Nowadays grenadine contains very rare pomegranate juice: often various red fruits are used for grenadine, sometimes even no fruits at all – just sugar and red dye. Real grenadine from pomegranate juice is therefore usually called pomegranate syrup. It is mainly known as an important ingredient in the cocktail “Tequila Sunrise”.
