This cultivar of the bitter orange shows a wild pattern in several green and creme tones on the leaves and on the immature fruits. In contrast, mature bitter oranges are uniformly orange-yellow.
Specially from the immature fruit (as well from the leaves) of the bitter orange the aromatic oil “Petitgrain” is won. Fragrance and aromatic oils from the flower are marketed as neroli oil or orange blossom water. Dried flowers are often added to flavored teas. The bitter juice of bitter oranges is processed together with the peel to the Italian bitter orange lemonade “Aranciata Amara” and the liqueur “Curacao”. From the whole ripe fruit orange marmalade is produced. The peel can also be candied.
