The brazilian grape tree which bears the jabuticaba is a good example of cauliflory, in which a plant produces its flowers and fruits directly on the trunk or on thick branches. The trunk can be covered with fruits all around.
I found this beautiful fruit on a very small tree in the Wissenschaftsgarten Frankfurt. The black skin is tough and tastes astringent, but the white, firm flesh inside, which contains 1 to 4 seeds, is sweet and reminds of a grape or gooseberry in taste. Unfortunately, the fruits are not tradable over long distances and must be eaten as freshly as possible, but they can also be used to make liqueur and jam.
