Like all rose hips, the rose hips of the Chestnut rose are edible after the fine hair surrounding the numerous seeds has been thoroughly removed. However, the fruits offer little pulp in relation to the seeds. But it is rich in vitamin E.
From rose hips a fruit tea can be prepared as well as jam (“hagebuttenmark, buttenmost”) . Dried and ground, they even can be used as a flour substitute and can be mixed with flour. The fruits remain on the bush during the whole winter. The later they are harvested, the sweeter they are. They contain enough sugar to make a fruit brandy (“pálinka”).
