The bog bilberry can be used just like the common blueberry and is itself actually not poisonous. However, rotting fruits can be infected with the fungus Monilinia megalospora, whose contents may cause vomiting, dizziness and other unpleasant effects when consumed in great quantities. Many German trivial names refer to this side effects (see list of trivial names below) and this is why many people believe, the bog bilberry would be poisonous.
Bog bilberries can be freshly eaten from the shrub or processed into jam, compote, liqueur and wine. They are lighter both inside and outside (because bloomed) than the common blueberry and a little bigger.
