The black chokeberry contains many vitamins and other important substances in such large quantities that it has also medical significance. The plant, which comes from North America, is mainly cultivated for the production of dried fruits, juice and food colouring (healthy and vegetarian substitute for the lice dye carmine and the azo dye Cochineal Red A).
Most people do not like the fresh fruits very much, but they are appreciated as dried fruits in baked goods and muesli, candied, in fruit teas and fruit punch. The strong tasting fruits are also suitable for the production of jam, jelly, liqueur, wine and syrup.
