Jennifer Markwirth
Botanical Fine Art Photographer. Digital Artist. Writer.
Inspired by the (ethno-)botanical collections entrusted to her care and supported by the botanical gardens of Frankfurt, Jennifer Markwirth has dedicated herself since 2013 to botanical object photography with the theme “Edible Plants and Fungi of the World”. She works on a repro stand with the focus stacking and stitching method to achieve consistently sharp and detailed images. Under the title “Flora obscura”, her culinary-botanical motifs always appear on a black background; from the darkness of the unknown, the colourful diversity of food plants is brought to light, mainly presented in her digital cabinet at www.flora-obscura.de. The motifs are often reminiscent of the paintings of the Old Masters. Insects and other animals and objects appear more and more frequently in the motifs, sometimes elevating them to vanitas still lifes.
Increasingly, Jennifer Markwirth is also turning her attention to cyanotype, following the example of the botanist and illustrator Anna Atkins, who created a “photographic herbarium” in the mid-19th century using this art printing technique.
